Monsters

So what's probably great about this film, for me is the it takes the viewer away from typical big-budget hollywood alien movies, but doesn't fail to deliver, if not, it gives more.

The story revolves around 2 strangers stuck together trying to get from Mexico to the United States, going through the "Infected Zone"; a large area in between these two countries that is overrun with extra terrestrials, when a probe from outer space crashes in Mexico. The story begins 6 years after the said crash when these aliens are no longer considered as that, but as its residents.

A cast and crew consisting of a little less than 50 people. The only credited cast members are our two protagonists. Everyone else is an extra or simply civilians playing as themselves. Festivals and other occasions going on at the time of filming where also used in the movie.

The director, Gareth Edwars shot most of the film in scenic South America, and even though during the course of the movie you'd expect a alien monster is gonna come up, you cannot help but marvel at these marvelous landscapes.

Even with the title, this is not your ordinary monster movie. The only monster that you'll probbably see would be a kind of mutated creature that is a cross between a giant squid and a giant spider, that's at least a hundred feet tall and they only come out at night. Probably, one of the factors that makes these creatures terrifying is that they're beautiful, bio-luminescent and mysterious.

What's great about this movie is probably that it doesn't sell itself too much like most monster movies going crazy on visual effects, cgi and that 3d craze. Just plain, normal viewing, experience who lets you feel what the characters feel without forcing it on you. The characters are easy to relate too because they don't seem like they're acting, just simply living or trying to stay that way.

For those who do love action movies with a lot of effects then you would be greatly disappointed. Also for those who think that this a typical love story where boy meets girl, gets on each other nerves then finds the time in the midst of trying to stay alive, to have amazing sex, well this is not it. Although when faced with danger, people do seem to open up more because maybe they think that it would be their last chance at being true to themselves and a huge burden is lifted from them as a new one replaces it.

The story is very deep and it's open-ended. It doesn't disappoint because it didn't promise anything in the first place, but it is fulfilling. This movie shows that less is more.
